Matilda Smith, LCSW

HI FOLKS! My name is Matilda.

It is my job to create and help maintain a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental space with each client in my care. I do not tell you what to do - As your therapist, I work with you and help you develop the resources you need to make lasting, positive changes. I am a Neurodiverse-affirming and Queer-affirming therapist.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 20+ years experience in the field, and have assumed roles spanning from entry level to leadership working with populations across the lifespan. I earned my Master of Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009.

My theoretical framework draws from multiple orientations and approaches: Humanistic, Strengths-Based, Multicultural, Trauma-Informed, Mindfulness, Solution-Focused, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Internal Family Systems. I actively use the modality of Geek Therapy in my practice, an intervention that integrates various kinds of media with therapy. For more info: https://geektherapy.org/

My special population interests are college students (both traditional and non-traditional), elderly people, Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse individuals. I recently began my courses to achieve my first-level Natural Lifemanship certification. I am so excited to integrate my passion for therapy and horses!

When not at work I love hanging out with my family and friends. I'm shamelessly obsessed with petting other people's dogs, the band Wham! and my corn snake, Maxine. I have seven tattoos - one is a horseshoe and the other six are dragons.

FUN FACT: Matilda is a third generation equestrian. Both her mother and grandmother owned horses and rode for pleasure, while she was an Intercollegiate rider at Wesleyan College in the Western discipline. She is also a birthday twin with her dad!

SEE YOU AT THE BARN!
